TUELLER: “I’ve reset our course for Io, by the way.”
TUELLER: “Esi’s there so we might as well go right there.”
RYO: Ryo just looks at him.
STORY: Figgan’s standing behind Tueller, just shaking her head disapprovingly. “I tried to stop him.”
STORY: “He’s so much bigger than me.”
TUELLER: “I am.”
STORY: “This is suicide, though.”
RYO: “He’s bigger than us all put together.”
TUELLER: “No, we’ll be fine.”
RYO: “But I agree that this isn’t a prudent path.”
MILLICENT: “Oh good, you have a plan?”
TUELLER: “No.’
MILLICENT: “I’m very interested to hear your-oh.”
MILLICENT: “I see.”
TUELLER: “We’ll figure something out.”
MILLICENT: “I’d like to address some concerns I have.”
STORY: Tueller!
TUELLER: Yes?
STORY: Calixta comes to visit you in your dreams. She’s the same practical, abrupt combination of superspy and computer mind you’re still getting used to, and you find yourself looking at her sitting on the end of your bed, smiling at you.
TUELLER: Tueller waves at her, tentatively.
STORY: She waves back.
TUELLER: “What’re you doing here?”
STORY: She shrugs, cheerfully enough. “What do you want me to be doing here?”
TUELLER: “I’ve learned at this point to be suspicious of what I want or think I want.”
STORY: She nods. “Makes sense. Wanna make out?”
TUELLER: “Yes, of course.”
STORY: Your normal dream becomes significantly rowdier! It gets a bit hazy before anything beyond an R rating happens and you drift back into whatever other kinds of dreams Tueller normally has.
STORY: Ryo!
RYO: Here!
STORY: Where in Peregrine are you bunking?
RYO: I imagine, at the moment, just in the crew quarters, since there’s plenty of room.
STORY: Okay! You dream of Chandra standing in the entrance to the barracks, cleaning his teeth with his tongue and looking straight at you.
STORY: He beckons you with a finger, a mix of friendly familiarity and hostility.
STORY: It’s a “you’re in trouble” beckon.
RYO: Ryo sits up and puts on his glasses. “I imagine you’re testy that I helped get you killed?” He stands.
STORY: He puts a finger on his lips and waves you along with him as he steps away.
RYO: Ryo follows.
STORY: You find him sitting on a crate in the cargo bay. “Testy is a way to put it. Why, Ryo? We’ve known each other so long.”
STORY: “I trusted you.”
RYO: Ryo looks down. Then back up. “You went too far, Tormod.”
STORY: “You went with me.”
RYO: “As far as I could follow, yes.”
STORY: “And then?”
RYO: “And then, I couldn’t. Or, at least, I didn’t.”
STORY: “Chickened out?”
RYO: He considers this. “Perhaps. I prefer to think that I stepped up, listening to my conscience. But maybe that’s a lie. I’m not sure, honestly.”
STORY: “Always so cool. Ryo the businessman. Everything logical.” He’s taunting you.
STORY: “You screwed me for your own gains, admit it.”
RYO: Ryo smiles at this. “I’m living in a crew dorm. Hardly seems to have been much gain.” He continues to smile.
STORY: He stands suddenly and crosses the distance between you, grabbing your cheeks with one hand and looking straight into your eyes.
STORY: “You fucking snake.”
RYO: Ryo freezes. He does not, however, look away.
STORY: He lets go, giving you a look like he can’t quite read you.
STORY: “I’m gonna haunt you til you die, Hanaka.”
RYO: “Of that, I have no doubt.”
STORY: You drift back into whatever restless sleep you were getting on that cheap cot.
STORY: Millie!
MILLICENT: Howdy
STORY: You dream Alejo is in your quarters, straightening the papers on your desk.
MILLICENT: “Here, don’t get them mixed up, please.”
MILLICENT: Millie crosses to him.
STORY: He smiles and gives you space. “Just trying to help, sorry.”
MILLICENT: She smiles at him. “It’s alright, but I’ve got it.”
MILLICENT: “Alejo, you’re dead, aren’t you?
STORY: “What? Am I?” He looks down at his chest, pats it jokingly. “Oh no!”
STORY: “I feel pretty alive.”
MILLICENT: “Well, that’s good news, I suppose. Do you mind if I examine you anyway?”
MILLICENT: “For my own peace of mind.”
STORY: He laughs. “Always business.”
MILLICENT: “I think you are dead. You died getting us away from Chandra’s compound.”
STORY: “Mm. Yeah, maybe.”
MILLICENT: Millie pushes him in the shoulder. “You’re not usually that stupid.”
STORY: “You were always the smart one, doc.”
STORY: “Hey listen.” He scratches his head in that familiar way he always did and walks over to your little table, leaning back on it. “It’s your fault I’m dead.”
MILLICENT: Millie flinches. “Why would you say that?”
STORY: “Because it’s true. You did this to me.”
MILLICENT: Millie frowns. “I really am feeling the strong urge to give into my guilt, but I’m afraid you’ll have to be more specific.”
STORY: “If you cared about me, you’d have saved me.”
MILLICENT: “Hmmmm. No, I don’t think that’ll work for me. I doubt I could have even lifted the hammer.”
MILLICENT: “I’m open to working through my feelings of guilt, but I don’t think we’re there yet.”
STORY: “You don’t want to admit it to yourself.”
MILLICENT: “I’m just looking for a cohesive through-line, dear. Believe me, I know all about survivor’s guilt after Nikau.”
STORY: Alejo looks frustrated.
MILLICENT: “I blamed myself for a long time. So, I appreciate you, my grief process, trying to set this up for me to slide into those old habits, but you’re honestly going to have to do a better job of blaming me.”
MILLICENT: “Come on, now. Let’s workshop this.”
MILLICENT: “Oh! Maybe I feel bad for having been in a position to be rescued?”
STORY: Alejo narrows his eyes.
STORY: “Why don’t I just kill you then?”
STORY: He’s holding a knife, one he definitely didn’t have before.
MILLICENT: “I don’t think that’s very helpful, guilty part of my psyche.”
MILLICENT: “I think I’m close. What if I feel guilty because I went for a ride with Chandra instead of keeping the data? But, see, Alejo would have been glad I went along to keep Kahn alive.”
MILLICENT: “So that doesn’t work.”
STORY: He raises the knife threateningly, ready to bring it down on you.
MILLICENT: Millie ignores him, turns, still thinking. “Ah!” She spins, pointing at his chest, “I feel guilty for not telling you about my feelings earlier and letting you die without really knowing them!” The knife is inches from her face.
MILLICENT: “What do you think?”
STORY: He looks exhausted. You drift back to sleep.
STORY: Morning! The birds are tweeting, Astra is teaching Erwin how to cook eggs, you can hear Figgan singing to herself from the bridge.
STORY: What’s the plan now that you have Yetide?
TUELLER: Well, I’d like to interrogate her about the rest of the family’s location.
MILLICENT: Millie’s plan was to knock her out constantly with an IV, I think there’s room for Millie to have knocked her out overnight with drugs, but for her to be coming to strapped to the table in the infirmary, ready for interrogation
STORY: Sure.
STORY: All three of you enter the infirmary to start your interrogation and find Yetide still unconscious.
RYO: Ryo looks back and forth to Tueller and Millie.
MILLICENT: Millie checks her meds.
MILLICENT: Should she be awake?
STORY: Yes! You didn’t screw up the medication or anything.
TUELLER: Tueller tries to gently shake her awake. “Sis, time to wake up.”
RYO: “Didn’t think you conked her that hard.”
STORY: She doesn’t stir. She’s warm, just sleeping.
MILLICENT: Millie checks her vitals.
STORY: Assessment + Expertise please!
TUELLER: “Head injuries are tricky.”
MILLICENT: /roll 2d6 + 2
STORY: josh rolled 8 + 2 = 10
STORY: You can’t find any reason why she’d still be unconscious, Millie, all her vitals seem normal and fine. She’s not in any danger. You gain a Data Point around Yetide’s status.
MILLICENT: “That’s strange. The drugs seem to be out of her system, she’s not in shock, her brain functioning seems to be normal.”
MILLICENT: She turns to face the others. “She should be awake.”
TUELLER: “Shoot her full of adrenochrome?”
MILLICENT: “I can give her a mild stimulant, but I’d be worried about anything too serious after that punch you gave her.”
MILLICENT: Millie gives Yetide a mild stimulant and waves some smelling salts under her nose.
STORY: You all stand around a minute waiting for something to happen.
STORY: Nothing does.
MILLICENT: “Huh.”
STORY: Her breathing is normal, all vitals still steady. She’s just not awake.
RYO: “That was less exciting than I expected.”
TUELLER: “We’ve got her, at least. A DNA test will prove she is who she is. It’d be nice to get some intel from her, but we’ve got her.”
TUELLER: Tueller’s voice is a little flat, but just a little.
MILLICENT: “Sorry, Tueller. I don’t understand what’s going on with her.”
MILLICENT: “But I’ll set up an alarm to ring the ship in case her vitals change.”
TUELLER: “Neither do I. We can give it some time. She’s not going anywhere.”
TUELLER: “We have to make a call, though. We’ve got no leads on the rest of my family or CJH. I don’t want to go back without Esi or, baring that, Bilbo. Those are hard asks, though, without any intel.”
MILLICENT: “I’ll start checking the sectornet, see if there’s any chatter or activity that looks like them. Anything I should be looking for?”
RYO: “I can shake some trees as well.”
TUELLER: “I don’t know what a system-wide criminal enterprise looks like when it goes underground.”
MILLICENT: “Fair, I’ll see what I can come up with.”
TUELLER: “Esi liked luxury.”
RYO: “What would be the parts of the business most vital to keep going? Is there a specific venture or set of ventures that are essential?”
TUELLER: “Bilbo was all about the cutting edge tech. It was his passion. If he’s working while lying low, there would be a larger than expected power draw.”
RYO: Ryo nods. “That’s a place to start. And presumably, if he has that sort of tech, he has support for it. Technicians, suppliers, parts. I’ll start looking for a paper trail.”
STORY: Are you splitting up and pursuing those leads?
RYO: Yeah, unless someone stops him, Ryo is going to do some paper chasing.
MILLICENT: I think so!
MILLICENT: Millie sets up that alarm in case Yetide’s vitals change and then hits a terminal
STORY: All right!
STORY: Millie, let’s have Assessment + Interface to see whether you get any leads on Esinam.
STORY: Ryo, Assessment + Expertise to track down Bilbo.
STORY: Tueller, what animal are you irrationally terrified of?
MILLICENT: /roll 2d6 + 2
STORY: josh rolled 11 + 2 = 13
RYO: /roll 2d6+2
STORY: ablair01 rolled 4 + 2 = 6
TUELLER: It’s not irrational to be terrified of snakes.
STORY: Millie! You find solid information confirming the following: Esinam is, bafflingly, still on Io, doing business as normal. You’re able to hack remotely into some A-Sec databases and find records of at least four different strike team attempts to go in and extract her that all failed in a very deadly way. No one has even gotten close. She’s still living in utter luxury, hunkered down, safe as houses.
STORY: You get a data point towards the search for Esi.
STORY: Ryo! Bad news. Bilbo is -off- the map. You follow the paper trail far longer than you’ve ever seen one exist, shell company after shell company, alias after alias, and you’re able to track his movements and expenses for a few weeks after the warrant went out, and then he just vanishes. There’s no sign of him as of four weeks ago.
STORY: Your gut tells you he must be hiding somewhere in the trio of Earth, Mars, or Luna – given his access to money and his technological needs, but those are three enormous places he could easily disappear into.
RYO: Ryo goes to get a drink.
STORY: Tueller, you’re in engineering trying to make yourself useful, tightening the bolts Loll always used to have to maintain, when roughly six hundred snakes come slithering towards you, straight towards you, they’re absolutely going to overtake you RIGHT NOW OH GOD.
TUELLER: Tueller screams and climbs.
STORY: Face Adversity + Physique please!
TUELLER: /roll 2d6+2
STORY: chris.stuart rolled 6 + 2 = 8
STORY: You clamber on top of the engine itself, getting to safety but knocking the catalytic converter out of place. You’re going to have to fix that if you ever survive THESE SNAKES.
STORY: You glance down and it’s quiet. Dark, too. Hmm.
STORY: What are you doing on top of the engine?
STORY: Ah, the catalytic converter’s out of place. You should fix that. That must be what you’re up here to do.
TUELLER: Tueller gets right to it, shrugging and getting to it. He’s careful. Tries to make sure that it’s within his ability to do and he won’t need to call Millie in.
STORY: Ryo! When you head into the kitchen, Astra’s there. She gives you her usual shy smile.
RYO: “Hello. Seems a minute since we’ve gotten to see one another. How are you?”
STORY: Her smile gets a bit wickeder. “Lonesome.”
STORY: She walks towards you, dragging her hand along the counter lightly.
RYO: He pretends not to notice this. “I realize dashing around space isn’t what we’d originally discussed for this position. I am sorry. I promise, though, to make it up to you.”
STORY: She presses her lips together, judging whether to say anything further. “Yeah? Like how?”
RYO: He hasn’t been looking at her squarely until now. He looks at her for a long moment. “How would you like?”
STORY: She smiles broadly. “You know.”
RYO: He moves in and kisses her.
STORY: Things get fuzzy!
STORY: Fade to next scene!
STORY: Millie!
MILLICENT: Howdy!
STORY: Erwin comes by while you’re doing your research.
STORY: “Dr. Breedlove?”
MILLICENT: “Oh, hi dear. How are you today?”
STORY: “I’m. Fine, I ran out of homework. My dad – he gave me things to study, culture, language, that kind of thing.”
STORY: “I need advanced material.”
MILLICENT: “I see.”
MILLICENT: “Where did you leave off and which subject would you like to study next?”
STORY: “I was hoping you could teach me… what you know.”
MILLICENT: “Ah. Well, I have focused my studies mostly in biology, medicine, computer construction, coding, repair and theory, molecular bionics…” Millie goes on for a while.
MILLICENT: “Do any of those interest you?”
STORY: “Yes! All of them.” He sits cross-legged and listens to you as long as you will talk. He’s very engaged, absolutely in awe of you.
MILLICENT: Millie puts together a syllabus in her head and gives him an initial lecture, the one she used to give her students on the importance of thoughtful, ethical scientific study.
STORY: Excellent!
STORY: Okay, everyone’s free from their little side scenes and can go back to plotting.
TUELLER: “or it’ll work out. You’ll see.”
MILLICENT: “Are you crazy? That’s the first one.”
RYO: “I take it back. Figgan, dear, I agree wholeheartedly. ‘Suicide’ is a more appropriate descriptor.”
TUELLER: “We’ve got weeks to come up with a plan we’ll be fine.”
RYO: Ryo purses his lips, adjusts his glasses, and looks at Tueller.
STORY: Astra comes by with tea and water for everyone. She hands a cup to Ryo.
MILLICENT: “Tueller. This is a bad idea.”
MILLICENT: “So far! I’m open to improving it.”
TUELLER: “It’s just an idea. It’s far too early to say whether it’s good or bad.”
RYO: Ryo is startled. He steps back from her.
MILLICENT: “I don’t. I don’t know. I suppose. It could work.”
MILLICENT: “But how?”
STORY: Astra looks confused, still just offering the tea. “Sir?”
RYO: “Who is this?” He sounds very anxious.
TUELLER: “We won’t know until we’re on the ground. Well, moving cities on top of lava.”
RYO: “WHO IS THIS?” Ryo shouts, interrupting Tueller.
TUELLER: “But we’ll figure it out….uh, that’s Astra. Your… I’m not sure what she is.”
RYO: He moves further back from her.
TUELLER: “She works for you, buddy.”
RYO: Ryo looks at Tueller and then back at Astra. “What?”
TUELLER: “You should probably get some more sleep. Your mind is going.”
TUELLER: “She’s been with us since there was an ‘us’.” Tueller points to the four of us.
MILLICENT: Millie’s head turns as she regards this turn of events.
MILLICENT: “Do you mind if I examine you, Mr. Hanaka?”
TUELLER: “Definitely your secretary or assistant or something like that. We didn’t really push you on it.”
RYO: Ryo shakes his head. “My mind is perfectly first-rate, Tueller, I assure you.”
STORY: Astra looks very shaken by this! She’s still just holding the tea, watching Ryo, frightened.
STORY: “Sir, I’m your assistant.”
RYO: He has put as much distance as he can from all of them.
RYO: He squints at her. “That’s . . . ” He shakes his head.
STORY: “You hired me from the operations pool, sir?”
STORY: “Said I was too talented to be doing shipment confirmations?”
STORY: Erwin wanders in, and Astra turns to look and shouts in alarm, dropping the tray of teacups.
MILLICENT: Aside to Tueller, “I bet he says that to all the promising executive assistants.”
TUELLER: Tueller looks puzzled by the yelling.
TUELLER: “Why would he say that to promising executive assistants?”
STORY: Close Up for Tueller
STORY: She slams herself against a bulkhead, trying to put distance between her and Erwin, pointing with a shaking hand. “Who’s that?”
RYO: Ryo’s eyes widen at this turn of events.
MILLICENT: Millie gives everyone the side eye.
MILLICENT: “Who’s the kid, incidentally?”
RYO: “There’s something very wrong here. First, Tueller going bat-shit crazy. Then, this assistant nonsense. And now . . . ”
TUELLER: “Astra, Erwin. Erwin, Astra. You’ve met before, but who can keep the names straight?”
MILLICENT: “Hello, kid.”
STORY: Astra tries to cower near Ryo.
MILLICENT: “Are you a stowaway?”
STORY: Erwin looks confused.
STORY: “What?”
STORY: “No?”
RYO: Ryo is wary, but feels a bit sorry for her.
RYO: He doesn’t move away this time.
TUELLER: “I’m not going crazy. I’m completing our mission.”
TUELLER: “No need to skulk around.”
RYO: “Tueller. Bat. Shit. Crazy. I’m a fan of decisive action. This is foolishness.”
TUELLER: “Erwin, are you doing dream work again? Is that’s what’s going on here?”
STORY: Erwin shakes his head. “This is awake.”
RYO: “Dream work?”
STORY: He gestures to the room. “Like, here. Everyone’s awake. This is crazy, though, and like – should I not be here?”
MILLICENT: “Tueller, you know the kid? I’ve forgotten him?”
TUELLER: “Yes, that’s Erwin. He’s…it’s complicated, but yes, you know him.”
STORY: Erwin looks nervous, keeping space between him and the others.
RYO: “I know Erwin.”
MILLICENT: “Okay, so some of us are forgetting others.”
MILLICENT: “Fine.”
MILLICENT: “Is there anyone else on this ship?”
TUELLER: “I haven’t forgotten anything.”
RYO: He adjusts his glasses and looks at Astra again. He offers her a tepid smile. “I’m sorry. I . . . ” He trails off.
TUELLER: “Well, there’s my sister.”
TUELLER: “Yetide.”
STORY: Three people all look at Tueller and in unison say, “Who?”
STORY: Erwin, Astra, and Figgan look around at each other, trying to figure out who’s the crazy one here.
MILLICENT: “Oh great.” Millie runs to the sick bay.
STORY: It’s as you left it, Millie – empty and tidy.
RYO: “What?” Ryo looks at them all. “Yetide, Tueller’s sister. Who we just captured.”
MILLICENT: “Oh good, everything’s fine.”
MILLICENT: Millie comes back. “Good news! There’s no one in the sick bay!”
STORY: Figgan just looks at the others like now Ryo’s the crazy one. Yetide who? New guy is weird.
MILLICENT: “I don’t know why I checked, but it’s completely clear. That’s good, right?”
RYO: “What!” Ryo shakes his head. “It’s very, very bad.”
TUELLER: “Yetide is loose? That’s interesting.” Tueller doesn’t seem particularly upset about that.
TUELLER: “We should probably find her.”
RYO: “Tueller, something is very wrong with you. Yetide will kill us all. Dead.”
RYO: “Dead.” He repeats towards Millie.
TUELLER: “No she won’t. We’ll find her.”
MILLICENT: “But!” She says, raising a finger. “Ah ah. There’s no one there! So we’re fine.”
MILLICENT: “Fine!”
TUELLER: “If anyone sees a pretty black woman walking around, that’s Yetide, and we should probably find her and talk to her.”
RYO: “Oh for fuck’s sake. We are obviously not fine.”
TUELLER: “We will be. It’ll be fine.”
RYO: Ryo goes to Millie. “Doctor. Something very wrong is happening here. This is well outside of my depth. Think about what you’re seeing. This is not fine.”
MILLICENT: “You’re right, of course. There’s something terrible going on. Children just appearing out of nowhere. What do you think it is?”
RYO: “He didn’t appear out of nowhere.” Ryo nods back towards Astra. “She did, but that’s a different story.”
TUELLER: “I mean I know it’s weird but it’ll work out.”
RYO: “You just forgot him.”
RYO: “And, if I’m to believe you, I just forgot her.”
MILLICENT: “Well, we’ve definitely had a rash of spontaneous appearances.”
MILLICENT: “I think we can all agree.”
TUELLER: “Everyone has been here this entire time.”
TUELLER: “We’re also missing my sister and also you guys don’t remember that she was here and also that she is bad.”
RYO: “And Tueller is acting like he’s high on some sort of mood flattener.”
TUELLER: “She’s probably responsible for this since she fed us and gave us a bunch of alcohol before we kidnapped her.”
MILLICENT: “Oh could this be a drugs thing?”
RYO: “I’ve never heard someone say the word ‘fine’ so many times in such a short span.”
TUELLER: “I have to say it because you don’t seem to accept that it will all work out.”
RYO: “Particularly when things are evidently not fine.”
RYO: Ryo ignores Tueller.
TUELLER: “They’re not now but they will be.”
STORY: Astra looks panicked and runs from the room.
TUELLER: “oh hey she seems upset.”
MILLICENT: “Does anyone know if she’s prone to doing things like that?”
RYO: “Jesus. Will someone who knows her, go with her? She can’t be alone with Yetide running around free.”
STORY: Erwin nods, raising his hand. “I feel like this is a bad place for me to be right now. I’ll keep an eye on her.”
STORY: He goes after her.
TUELLER: “Did you and her have some weird sort of relationship?”
TUELLER: “She seemed oddly upset.”
RYO: “Thank you!” Ryo calls after him. “Erwin,” he adds once he’s long gone.
RYO: Ryo just looks at him blankly. Then he shakes his head. “It’ll be fine.” He turns back to Millie. “Seriously, we’ve got to find Yetide.”
MILLICENT: “Now you’re saying fine.”
RYO: “It was facetious.”
MILLICENT: “Okay! So, let’s split up.”
MILLICENT: “We can cover more ground that way.”
TUELLER: “See?”
TUELLER: “This is a great plan and we’ll fix whatever’s going on here.”
RYO: “This is madness. We’re going mad. Obviously. The second smartest person on this ship has just gone mad.”
TUELLER: “Yetide looks like me, except female.”
RYO: He shakes his head.
TUELLER: “Smaller, too.”
MILLICENT: “Second?”
STORY: Close Up for Ryo
STORY: his arrogance is so charming
MILLICENT: “Who’s the smartest?”
RYO: Ryo shakes his head at this. “We should stay together.”
TUELLER: “Well, if you’re staying together, come with me.”
RYO: “Finally, a good idea.”
TUELLER: “I’m off this way.” Tueller points towards engineering.
MILLICENT: “Okay, let’s go together!”
MILLICENT: “Seriously, who’s the smartest? That little alien mechanic?”
STORY: Figgan looks confused at all of you. “I’m… going to stay here and steer the ship.”
STORY: “Ryo. Ryo.“
TUELLER: He starts walking. It’s a different type of walk than you’re used to. He’s not crouched or defensive at all. Just strolling through the ship. Almost jauntily.
RYO: Ryo gives her a wink and a smile. Then he lets Millie go first, to make sure that she actually follows Tueller.
STORY: Figgan hisses a whispered plea to Ryo. “I don’t know who outranks me but can you please order me to turn us away from Io.”
RYO: “Yes! Please. Turn us away from Io.” He whispers this before he leaves.
MILLICENT: Millie practically floats after Tueller.
STORY: “Aye aye, sir!” She looks relieved and gets to flipping switches on the main console.
RYO: Ryo rushes to catch up with Millie and Tueller.
RYO: He also closes the bridge door and instructs Figgan to lock it behind him.
STORY: She does so!
TUELLER: Tueller jauntily strolls through the ship.
TUELLER: Glancing around with curiosity.
TUELLER: “Yetide? You out there sis?”
RYO: Ryo shakes his head, exasperated.
MILLICENT: Millie turns to her friends. “Isn’t it great how we’re finally coming together as a team?”
TUELLER: “I told you everything would turn out fine.”
